讲座内容简介:

Second language acquisition research has shifted from an almost exclusive focus on syntax to also include careful consideration of the importance of lexis. Lexis is defined not only individual words, but also commonly-occurring groups of words that are thought to be collectively linked to a single meaning (e.g. ‘on the other hand’, ‘by and large’, etc.). This lecture will present the speaker’s recent research investigating one particular type of lexical pattern known as collocation. Collocations are patterns that are determined more by convention than grammatical and semantic restrictions in a language (e.g. in English ‘tell a lie’ is natural but ‘speak a lie’ is not). Collocations can also vary from language to language, so they sometimes present a particular challenge to second language learners. The lectures will explain a series of studies designed to determine what factors affect the processing of collocations in a second language at a psychological level. The lectures will also discuss two recent studies that have been conducted in an effort to test two possible theoretical explanations for this congruency effect.
