Abstract

In the field of Cultural Studies, 'culture' is often referred to as “big C” culture, which includes popular culture, which is contrasted with “small c” culture, which includes language. Using this distinction, as analogy can be made in relation to Intercultural Competence, in which there is “big IC” and “small IC”.

With “big IC”, we are referring to Intercultural Competence at the international levels, between nations, or at the b-2-b level, between international businesses. However, there is also “small IC”, which includes Intercultural Competence in classrooms in which there are teachers and students from many different linguistic and cultural groups. This workshop will, then, focus on those kinds of classroom settings to explore this concept of “small IC”.
