讲座简介:

In the digital age, the real power of media lies in the seemingly‘free’representations of views and opinions of various classes, social groups, ethnic communities and individuals. This paper holds the view that, like traditional forms of media such as printed newspapers, magazines, books, films and TV programmes, digital media also constructs and transforms social practices and cultural identities but in a much more dynamic and less predictable and controllable manner. With the deepening of cultural globalization that features international „norms and standards‟as regards information access and knowledge production and consumption in the cyber space, China‟s mainstream media faces two unprecedented major challenges from home and abroad, namely, the popular demand for open access to information and freedom of expression within the domains of China and the urgency for China to get its message across in the international community so as to win the understanding and support from both the Chinese people for the building of „a harmonious society‟and the people around the globe for the building of „a harmonious world‟. When we critique Western-based discourses that are increasingly shaping the cultural formations of non-Western societies, we must then see the urgent need to enhance the power, vision and effectiveness of our various media while opening more channels of communication with the international community that are seen as objective, trustworthy and fair-minded. If we want our CCTV and China Daily, for example, to enjoy the same respect and authority as BBC and The New York Times do, we should first and foremost understand the true nature and function of media and at the same time value the unique opportunity to critically reflect on what China can contribute to the world in the 21st century when countries, cultures and peoples are interconnected and interdependent as never before.
